Absolutely lovely copy of an iconic book. John Tradescant, among other things, planted the gardens at Hatfield House and gave his name to a whole genus of plants (Tradescantia). This first edition is illustrated with a colour frontispiece, a number of B&W plates and a fold-out family tree.

The book has been handsomely rebound in quarter leather by Stephen Holliday in Oxford with a leaf-green calf spine cover and green-patterned marble paper infill, in sympathy with the original green cloth publisher's binding; the book is a modern "tight" binding with matching red and green headbanding. Inside is very clean and the new endpapers are in an unassuming plain stock which tones exceptionally well with the paper on which the book was printed. There is very light foxing confined to the page edges (not seen from the inside) and the boards have almost no wear. 345 pages
