Biographical Sketches and Recollections of Henry John Smith

Biographical Sketches and Recollections (With Early Letters) of Henry John Smith, Oxford, 1894. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket.

Smith was an eminent mathematician, noted for his rigour, who made considerable advances in number theory and geometry and was Savilian professor of mathematics at Oxford in the latter part of the 19th century. Smith died in 1883 and this is a posthumous collection of some of his correspondence with other leading figures, together with an introduction to his collected mathematical papers (which are available as a separate publication edited by J.W.L. Glaisher). This copy is signed by his sister, Eleanor Elizabeth Smith, who was a noted contributor to women's education.

The book has boards clad in pleasing light blue cloth with bright gilt titling and only minor corner wear. The spine cover is of vellum with five gilt bandings; there is a short split across the line of one of the gilt lines but the remainder of the spine cover is in excellent condition. Inside is very clean with a tissue-guarded portrait of Smith and an inscription to a friend by Eleanor Smith on the title page. 99 pages. Privately Printed.

An unusual gift for a mathematician.
